“Why do I have No Motivation To Do Anything?” is a question I had from one of my readers recently and it’s a question I’ve heard from many people as of late.
Remember; you are not alone. There is no one simple answer to this common feeling, however there are a number of likely causes to explore. There is more to it than having no motivation or just feeling some negativity.
We’ll get to those shortly, but first, take a moment just to close your eyes, relax, and see if any answers come to you. Sometimes just quieting the mind can be enough to begin the discovery process to answer the all important question of ‘why do I have no motivation to do anything?’
In order to find the deeper answer, it’s time to start exploring. During the exploration process, it’s vital to be honest with yourself. Sometimes we’re not honest with others because of embarrassment or shame, but don’t let that be case with yourself. In front of yourself, just be brutally honest.
Why do I have no motivation to do anything?
So, lets begin digging.
Taking on too much.
Feeling overwhelmed? Perhaps you’re taking on too much. If you feel like there’s more to do than you have time for, then you have bitten off more than you can chew, and it’s time to scale back.
It becomes worse when you have a lot on your plate that requires a lot of thinking. Not like the kind of tasks that can we can almost automate, but the kind of tasks that require intense thinking or planning.
When tasks begin piling up it can become deeply stressful and the burden of constantly thinking about those tasks can play on the mind and
Wanting to do too much
In addition to taking on too much, it could be that there are so many things you wish to accomplish. But because there is so much you would need to do, you don’t know where to begin. I know many people in that position because we do live in an age where so much is possible.
The internet has created opportunities that were not there before. Naturally that invokes within, and ignites the spark, to do the things we may have only once dreamed about. I truly believe that it is deeply underestimated the just how much an energy drain working long hours online can be. So be mindful, your dreams may have expanded, but so will the energy required to undertake them.
Not allowing yourself to recharge
The other part of who we are in this day and age, is we often take on so much and schedule everything in those very brightly coloured calendars of ours. Very rarely do you see people schedule in some rest and relaxation time.
Doing that is just as important as anything else we schedule into the diary and, if anything, it’s even more important. Schedule that massage. Go to the movies etc. Whatever your method of recharging your batteries, do that.
Being a high achiever
Unfulfilled ambitions can play just as heavy on the mind and cause a level of burnout. The fact is there’s no easy answer to this as your ambitions are your ambitions. The key is the level of expectation you hang over yourself.
If your expectations are too high, then constantly not having them not met could really tax your energy in the long term and therefore affect your motivation.
Why do I have no motivation to do anything? Where to go from here?
There’s no easy answer to this question. It’s a bit like conducting a diagnostic on yourself to see which of the potential answers resonate with you. You’re going to have to brutally honest with yourself to understand if you’re doing too much, setting your expectations too high etc. The answer will come. Take a break and perhaps return with a fresh set of eyes.
In the mean time, I want you to remember something. Don’t be so hard on yourself, you’re doing your best and keep doing that. Don’t beat yourself up if you have no motivation to do anything. Doing so only makes it worse. Only when you drop some of that burden, will you be able to get out of the funk you’re in.
Over to you? Did any of those points resonate? How have you dealt with times you’ve struggled with your mojo? Let me know in the comments below.
