Let’s face it – exercise is tough, no matter how experienced you are. Maintaining a strict workout schedule on top of the regular stresses of daily life can be difficult. When you get home from a long day of work, running errands, and taking the kids to school, you don’t want to go to the gym and exercise for an hour. You’d rather kick your shoes off and relax. But instead of that, keep these tips in mind to maintain motivation for your next workout.
- Give Yourself a Pep Talk
The biggest obstacle to exercising is your own self-doubt. It may be difficult to maintain a schedule, true, but you still know that you should be exercising regularly. So why put it off? After a long, stressful day, try to talk yourself into going on a run. Think about how great you’ll feel afterward, and what a positive impact it will make on your life. Eventually, by being positive, you’ll talk yourself into a strict workout routine.
- Get Dressed to Exercise
This might sound simple, but it really does work. As soon as you change out of your work clothes when you get home, change into your exercise clothes. Don’t just put on a shirt and some shorts – put on your socks, your shoes, and get your headphones out. By getting ready for a workout, you’re already halfway there.
- Set Attainable Goals
When you set out to get fit, don’t just start going to the gym and expect results. Before you even pick up a weight or step on a treadmill, set a goal you want to achieve. But don’t make them too far out of reach. Say, ‘I’m going to lose five pounds by this date,’ or ‘I’m going to be able to do X by this date.’ This gives you something to work toward. You get to watch yourself make progress, which helps you feel better about achieving your goals.
- Track Your Progress
Tracking your progress is an important part of exercise. It not only helps you visualize your gains, but also helps you keep on a workout schedule. If you can see that you’ve skipped the gym once already this week, you’re much less likely to skip it again since you have a goal you want to achieve. Setting goals and tracking progress go hand in hand – you shouldn’t do one without the other.
- Find a Partner
When you exercise by yourself, you don’t have anyone to keep you accountable. By finding a workout partner, you open up your workouts in a number of ways. You’re able to do a variety of exercises that are impossible for a single person, you have someone to encourage you during your workout, and you have someone to motivate you when you’re down. Getting a workout partner is a win-win.
- Don’t Be Hard on Yourself
All of the above be being said, don’t be too hard on yourself. If you’re just starting out an exercise regimen, you don’t want to push yourself so hard that you give up after the first week. Take your time. Go at a pace that’s right for you. And keep up with it to improve and achieve your goals.
