If you think I am going to write about New Year’s resolutions or goals you’re incorrect.

Why? Because I have never believed in resolutions or goal setting at the beginning of a new year. All you need is a shift in your mindset to accomplish what you want — not a new year. Just a new mindset!

A few weeks ago we had a special guest come to Daman’s Strength Training and share his story.

His name is Brandon Rumbaugh, and he is a retired U.S. Marine who was injured after stepping on an IED in Afghanistan in 2010. Brandon is a double-amputee and now travels to tell his story about how he is conquering his everyday.

Everything he said that day will stick in my mind forever, as well as the other 100-plus attendees listening to Brandon share his story. But one thing that will certainly stick the most is what he said about hitting the snooze button, which I thought was absolute gold.

We always tell our members, “feet on the floor.” Since 2009, this is something that we continue to tell them.

When that alarm goes off, get up and get your “feet on the floor.”

Getting your feet on the floor is hands down the hardest part, but it is the first “step” to a successful day.

Your bed is warm, you’re tired, you’re comfortable and you’re literally one second from falling back into a nice deep awesome sleep.

We are all guilty of hitting the snooze button, but what comes from that over and over and over is a culmination of wasted time.

Wasted time that, over time, we could be accomplishing much more.

Brandon’s message was just that. He made it clear to all of us that we need to set that alarm and get up.

Many times people have multiple alarms set knowing they are going to continue to stay in bed and hit the snooze button.

Setting one alarm and getting up when that alarm sounds is a powerful thing. It goes much further than just trying to avoid hitting the button. You begin to grind in a mindset of motivation. You begin to create such great habits. You slowly begin to accomplish much more. You have a smooth morning. You create better habits for breakfast, and you put yourself in better mood.

A better mood creates a better day.

I remember vividly my mother giving me my alarm clock when I was about 10 years old. It was a Christmas gift from the Rochester Township Fire Department. She sat me on my bed, showed me how to set my alarm to get up for school and said, “When it goes off, you get up.”

And 27 years later, I am still doing what she told me. (Now that’s funny!)

Back then I thought it was just about setting my alarm. Little did I know what she was teaching me — accountability for myself.

Accountability to get up, get ready for school, get to the bus stop on time and be 100 percent responsible for accomplishing what I needed.

Maybe it’s time to set that alarm to a time you want.

When that alarm sounds be determined to start your day with momentum and motivation.

Don’t snooze it and lose it.
