For the first time in his professional basketball career, Blake Griffin will be playing against the Los Angeles Clippers, not for them. Griffin and the Detroit Pistons will be welcoming the Clippers to the Motor City for the first time since Los Angeles traded the star forward to Detroit late last month.
But while most would assume Griffin has extra motivation for Friday’s game, the former Clipper says he doesn’t see any: “they’re just another team we’re trying to beat.”
“I spent a lot of time with some of those guys in that locker room,” Griffin added via ESPN. “Shared some memories, some good, some bad. At the end of the day, we’re worried about our playoff position, we’re worried about keeping this ship moving forward.”
Having spent seven-plus seasons with Los Angeles, Griffin knows what it’s like to face and old teammate playing for another franchise. He’s now in the shoes of said player competing elsewhere.
“It’s always tense when you face somebody that’s played for your team,” Griffin said. “I was a player; I know how that feels. You want to beat them, if you left on good terms or bad terms, it really doesn’t matter. And the guys that played with you want to beat him. Sometime it lends to a competitive game, sometime it leads to a locker room hostage situation. You never know.”
The Pistons are a perfect 4-0 since Griffin first took to the court for the team. He’s averaging 21.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 6.3 assists with Detroit.
